Loyola College holds sensitisation on gender equality

TURA: To bring about sensitisation on gender inequality and challenges relevant to welfare of a girl child, the State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW), Meghalaya, organised a programme recently at Loyola College, Williamnagar in East Garo Hills.
The programme was in relation to the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao flagship scheme, the objective and overall goal of which is to celebrate a girl child ensuring her education and active participation in the society.
During the programme, Mission Director, SRCW, informed that Ri Bhoi District has been selected as one of the 100 districts for implementation of BBBP scheme in Meghalaya which has also been expanded to East Garo Hills.
Debate and speech competitions were conducted to involve and engage the students in the holistic understanding of BBBP, with the theme “breaking stereotypes through education.” A panel discussion session was also incorporated to educate the students further on the various aspects relevant to the scheme, with the theme “Breaking barriers through Education.”
The panelists comprised of East Garo Hills DC, Swapnil Tembe, Chief Judicial Magistrate, F S Sangma, Assistant Director, MBOSE, Balmuri Marak and Mission Director, SRCW, Dr C P Konglah.The discussion covered various aspects of BBBP, educating young women on laws related to women and child development, defining barriers in education, and the less talked about issue of challenges concerning mental health and welfare of a child in a rapidly changing socio-economic technological era.
During the discussion, the panelists stressed on the need of behavioral and attitudinal change from grassroots level and explained the role of community in shaping the outlook of a child.
Awareness regarding significant functioning institutions to safeguard the welfare of women and children were also conveyed, such as OSC and helpline number of 181.
