SHILLONG: NPP state president WR Kharlukhi said on Sunday that he was not willing to become a Rajya Sabha member.
The election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat is likely to be held in March as the term ends on April 12.
Kharlukhi said even in 2008, he had rejected the offer made by party leader PA Sangma to become the Rajya Sabha member.
“I am interested in state politics and hence want to concentrate here”, Kharlukhi said when asked about his response regarding taking up the post.
According to Kharlukhi, there are capable leaders in NPP who can be elected as Rajya Sabha MP.
NPP will project the name of the candidate before seeking support from all the coalition partners.
Earlier, the Chief Electoral Officer Frederick Kharkongor had a meeting with the Assembly officials to discuss the Rajya Sabha election as the Election Commission of India can announce the date anytime.
