SHILLONG: Paving the way for private companies like Ola and Uber to operate in Meghalaya, the State Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal for allowing the use of two-wheelers as bike taxis besides approving the rules for regulating the license of taxi aggregators in the state.
Talking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that transport department brought the rules to encourage own people, numbering more than 10, to have aggregators.
“It’s more like the models of Ola and Uber in other cities and we appreciate the initiative and hence, we approved the rules taking into consideration the importance of these services, especially in towns like Shillong, Tura and Jowai,” Tynsong said.
On being asked about the licensing aspect, he said that anyone who intends to carry out the service will be allowed to apply for licence and it will be issued by Transport department.
He, however, said that companies like Rapido and Swiggy are companies from outside and they have to apply for trading license as per the mandate of the sixth schedule.
When asked if these rules are for four-wheeler services like Ola and Uber, Tynsong said that the rules are meant for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, and anybody can apply for license.
