GUWAHATI: Five crude bomb-like items recovered at Panikhaiti under Chaygaon police station in Kamrup district on Wednesday morning were later destroyed by a bomb squad at an isolated place, police said.

Official sources confirmed that the items kept inside a bag along with a bike (Pulsar) were left abandoned by some individuals who had reportedly attacked three persons, including a woman, but fled after some residents of the village raised a hue and cry.

According to a statement by Assam police on Wednesday evening, the accused Babul Mandal and his father Buddhi Mandal, and three others came to the house of Rekha Choudhury (Babul’s wife) and attacked her, her father, Buddheswar Choudhury and her brother Lokhen Choudhury with machete and knives.

It may be noted that Rekha had been married to Babul, (who hails from Boko) a year back, but following a marital discord, the girl returned to her father’s house and was staying there.

“Today at around 2.30 am, the accused, Babul Mandal and his father Buddhi Mandal, Mithun Mandal, Dipak Das and another unidentified person came to the house of the girl and attacked her father Buddheswar Choudhury, her brother Lokhen Choudhury and the girl. There was hue and cry and the villagers came out in rescue,” the statement said.

Chaygaon police have registered a case (number 132/20) in this connection and necessary legal action is being taken, the sources said.

The bomb squad had destroyed the items in the presence of a magistrate without ascertaining if they contained any explosives.  “After destruction, the squad certified that the destroyed devices may contain chemicals used in firecrackers,” the statement added.
