Hopingstone, 5 MDCs, KSU president depose before inquiry panel

NONGSTOIN: Assam authorities have accused several top leaders of the State including veteran politician Hopingstone Lyngdoh of inciting communal tension in Langpih leading to the police firing that claimed the lives of four innocent villagers last year.

The leaders were questioned as per the Kamrup district administration’s allegation that they instigated the local people to involve in communal clash at Langpih on May 14, 2010, during a hearing conducted by the PC Phukan inquiry commission in Guwahati on Saturday.

Besides the Nongstoin legislator Hopingstone Lyngdoh, others who were summoned by the PC Phukan Commission were KP Pangniang, MDC, Rymbrai; LG Nongsiej, MDC, Nongstoin; L Kharkongor, MDC, Nongthymmai; Adelbert Nongrum, MDC, Jaiaw, JB Basawiamoit, MDC, Mawkhar; and Samuel Jyrwa, president, Khasi Students’ Union (KSU).

All of them appeared before the Commission at the Circuit House in Guwahati on Saturday.

Speaking to The Shillong Times soon after the hearing, the Rambrai MDC, KP Pangniang, said they told the Commission that the allegations levelled by the Kamrup district administration against them was false and have no roots in connection with the Langpih episode.

They also denied the allegation of the Kamrup district authorities that local Khasi people attacked the Langpih police outpost of Assam before the firing took place.

The leaders pointed out that the four persons were shot dead beyond 200 kilometres from the Assam’s police outpost saying the villagers never attacked the outpost.
