SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has petitioned the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, to direct the Border Security Force (BSF) to recruit local youth from border villages in order to bring about a close coordination between them and the residents.
In a letter to Shah, the JSU stated that there is a communication gap between the BSF and the locals. The JSU has urged Shah to look into the issue of infiltration of Bangladeshis into villages in the border areas – Dawki till Muktapur, in West Jaintia hills, and in Shella, East Khasi Hills District – which has created a sense of insecurity among the residents.
JSU (Shillong Circle) president Treiborlang R Suchen alleged that Bangladeshi criminals frequently commit acts of violence along the border and assault the residents with sharp weapons. Further, it has appealed to Shah to direct the BSF to be serious in discharging their duty in guarding the border especially in areas that are not fenced and to deploy additional personnel to guard the unfenced areas especially in Dawki, Muktapur and Shella. Suchen said that the assaults by Bangladeshi criminals should stop and corrective measures taken to tackle the infiltration problem. The JSU criticised the Border Guard of Bangladesh alleging that they allow Bangladeshis to infiltrate into India.
