Rubber Board unfolds plan for Tripura

 AGARTALA: More area could be brought under natural rubber cultivation in Tripura without any adverse impact on the ecological balance.

A joint study involving ISRO and Rubber Research Institute (RRI) was carried out to identify potential area for rubber plantation in Tripura, which has already emerged a major player in raw rubber production in the country after Kerala.

Tipura, the second largest rubber producers state in the country can have more than one lakh hectares of land for rubber cultivation, said Additional Rubber Production Commissioner of Rubber Board, KG Mohanan here on Friday.

Talking to media, Mohanan said the previous study had earmarked one hectares of land for natural rubber cultivation in the state of which 60,000 hectares of land has already brought under the rubber cultivation.

The rubber trees are like other tree which gives out oxygen that helps to purify the environment.

Tripura produces 25875 MT raw rubber annually in over 59,285 hectares of land during 2010-2011 Financial Year.
