GUWAHATI: The high-level committee formed to review and suggest measures for implementation of Clause 6 of the Assam Accord submitted its final report to Assam chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal at his official residence here on Monday.

Sonowal who accepted the final report from the Justice (retd) Biplab Kumar Sharma led-committee, on behalf of the Union home ministry, before leaving for New Delhi, will submit the same to the ministry.

The entire state Cabinet members were present during the handover of the report even as representatives of the All Assam Students’ Union, who were part of the committee, were absent.

The Union home ministry had reconstituted the high-level committee in July, 2019 to suggest measures to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord, which pledges constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect, preserve and promote the culture, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the “Assamese” people.

Speaking to reporters after handing over the final report to the chief minister, Justice (retd) Sharma, said the 13-member committee was given six months time to complete its task.

“The committee had considered all aspects before preparing the final report. We had visited almost all the districts of the state to seek opinions and suggestions from various stakeholders. Over 1200 memorandums and representations from various quarters were received,” Sharma, the chairman of the committee, said.

State minister Himanta Biswa Sarma later informed the media that the sealed report, which has been received by the chief minister on behalf of the Centre, would be opened and seen by the Union home ministry which will thereafter thoroughly study and examine the report.

“If required the Union home minister may discuss any relevant matter with the committee or with the state government. As of now, we do not know what is in the report and can opine only after we see the report,” he said.
