SHILLONG: The Government authorities on Saturday evicted three more encroachers from the land of New Shillong Town which belongs to the State Government.

The Meghalaya Urban Development Authority Secretary T Lyngwa on Saturday said that the State MUDA had acquired the land in the New Shillong Township by following the law. “MUDA is the custodian of this land and these people encroached the land when it was full of jungles but the value of land has gone up now and they are trying to sell it quietly.”

It is learnt that there are nine families who have encroached into the land and three sheds were demolished by the Government on Saturday.

Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh also informed that the land was allotted to NEEPCO for the construction of their guest house besides other facilities.

“When our officers handed over the papers they found that there was encroachment and we demolished few encroached sheds,” Lyngdoh added.

It may be mentioned that the State Cabinet had recently approved the setting up of a New Shillong Township Development Agency to be headed by the State Chief Secretary, adding the Agency will be set up under the Societies Registration Act with an exclusive jurisdiction over the master plan area notified under the Shillong Township.

However, there was some resistance from the alleged encroachers when the Government authorities were evicting the encroachers.
