TURA: A trader from Goalpara district of Assam has reportedly been abducted by criminals in South Garo Hills district on Monday.
According to reports available, the victim Mohobul Haque, who deals in arecanut trade had gone to the Siju region of the district when he went missing from Nengrugittim village, 6 kms from Siju village.
This is the peak harvest time for the arecanut fruit and the Siju region has an abundance of its plantations which are much sought after by traders from Assam who buy the product in bulk and ship it out for manufacturing as dried suparis which are sold for a premium across the country.
According to sources, the family has not been able to contact the kidnapped trader since he went missing.
There have been several cases in the past when criminals have targeted traders who visit villages for the arecanut trade in Garo hills with abduction. Last year, several gangs were caught involved in abduction of traders.
Elderly woman’s body found: Meanwhile, Dalu police have recovered the body of a 70 year old woman who went missing on Saturday, last.
The victim, Wanri Sangma, was a village chieftain (Nokma)and she is suspected to have been murdered. Her body was found at Akipara Agitok village on Monday.
A murder case has been registered by police as they await the post mortem report. Interestingly, despite her disappearance for two entire days, no missing report was filed by the family.
Driver killed in road mishap: A 43 year old man, Frank Worrel N Sangma of Modynagar locality in Tura lost his life after sustaining injuries in a road mishap at a sharp road turn between Asanang village and Rongram on Monday.
The victim lost control of his maruti Ritz vehicle ML-05 H 1187 while negotiating a turn and plunged into a ditch below. He was taken to Tura civil hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his wounds.
