Consumer Affairs Minister assures to check adulteration of essential items

Imphal: Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution Minister M Oken on Wednesday assured the Manipur Assembly that the government will try to check adulteration of food and petroleum products in the state.

He said the IOC directly controls the distribution of petroleum products and there were allegations of kerosene being mixed with petroleum products.

IOC was informed and warning was given to the oil depot he said.

In another instance during surprise checking it was found the petroleum products were adulterated upto three per cent at Krishna Premi oil depot, Imphal.

It was slapped with a fine of Rs 50,000 and ordered to close down for 45 days, he said.

The government has started taking up steps to distribute kerosene and rice directly to the people.

Trinamul Congress leader Dr I Ibohalbi raising a call attention motion on the issue said as petroleum products were adulterated there was frequent break down of vehicles and added the menace of black marketing should be checked.

During the question hour, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, who also holds the Power portfolio, informed that prepaid service has been launched to ensure that people get electricity and there is no room of power theft.

The chief minister introduced grants for seven departments.

It included Rs 33.91 cr for State Legislature, Rs 4.51 cr for Council of Ministers, Rs 59.68 cr for Secretariat, Rs 234 cr for Municipal Administration, Urban development, Rs 5 cr for Election, Rs 809 cr for planning and Rs 8.16 cr for tourism.

It will expand to most of the city areas and the areas not covered by prepaid system will have new meter system.

About two lakh Infra red meter will be installed so that meter can not be manipulated, he said.

Irrigation Minister Ngamthang Haokip informed that Thoubal Multipurpose project will be completed by March 2014 and it will provide irrigation to 21,862 hectares of agricultural land.

It will provide 10 million gallon of drinking water besides 7.5 mw of power everyday, he said. (UNI)
