SHILLONG: Aahar resumed its journey on Sunday after a hiatus of eight days which was brought about by official restrictions on public movement on March 21. On Sunday was the 530th day.
For all these months, some people had become quite dependent on Aahar for their daily subsistence. With both money and food becoming scarce during lockdown, the sudden suspension of Aahar dealt a body blow to the guests.
On Sunday when the Aahar volunteers showed up, there was a palpable sense of relief among the motley respondents.
Incidentally, some of them confided in the volunteers that they survived on plain bread; others barely managed a morsel or two. Most of them said they had to make do with one measly meal only.
The guests were encouraged to carry food home for dinner as well on Sunday.
The number of takers was more and food had to be prepared twice to meet the requirement. Over 400 meals were served on Sunday.
Incidentally, on request of local police, food was served at an additional place — Paltan Bazar. From Monday, as long as lockdown continues, food will be served at both locations.
