Shillong: Senior police officials brushed aside reports of introduction of a dress code for the local taxi drivers in the city.

The East Khasi Hills Local Taxi Welfare Association (EKHLTWA) has also admitted that there were unconfirmed reports that the State Government would introduce a uniform for the local taxi drivers in the city.

“But that was when the executive committee of the Association was managed by former members but even then, we were and will be totally against this direction”, EKHLTWA general secretary Wandonbok Jyrwa said.

Claiming that they have always adhered to the rules and provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, Jyrwa said “From tinted glasses, minimum sitting capacity to minimum rate, we have done it all and we won’t want uniform in the list as it would affect our exchequer’.

It may be mentioned that the Sumo Association has recently introduced uniform dress code but as noticed, the same is not followed by the drivers.

Meanwhile, when asked about their reactions on the increase of public service vehicles initiated by the government , Jyrwa said no matter how many buses and maxi cabs are introduced, the rising population in the city makes sure that the local taxi drivers’ business is not affected.
