New Delhi: With the anti-corruption campaign gaining momentum across the country, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen on Monday welcomed the movement, calling it a result of the social commitment to eradicate the menace.

“The level of corruption is the same, there has been no dramatic increase in that. But what has happened is greater commitment on the part of society to curb corruption, I welcome it,” Sen said on the sidelines of a function here.

He, however, wished that the level of activism seen in movements by Anna Hazare and Baba Ramdev is also seen in areas like education, health and discrimination against women.

Amartya Sen speaking after he was conferred an honorary Doctor of Literature degree by the National University of Educational Planning and Administration.

Speaking after receiving the award, Prof Sen said he felt very honoured and privileged to be associated with the University.

“India does have many achievements in the success of a relatively small group of privileged people well trained in higher education and specialised expertise,” he said. (Agencies)
