Guwahati: Nearly 20 days after ruling Congress MLA Dr Rumi Nath and her second husband were physically assaulted by a mob of about 200 at a Karimganj hotel, 16 of the accused have so far been arrested and the three PSOs attached with Dr Nath suspended.

Moreover, two inquiry commissions have been set up to investigate into the matter by the government.

This was informed by Forest Minister Rockybul Hussian, on behalf of the chief minister who holds the Home portfolio, in separate replies before the state Assembly, which met for a five-day Monsoon session from today.

In response to an unstarred question by Dr Nath herself, Mr Hussain said the government was aware of the incident of assault on the MLA and her husband Abu Jakir Hussain on the night of June 29 at a Karimganj hotel.

He maintained that the officer in-charge of Karimganj police station had rushed to the hotel on receiving information that a crowd was assembling near the hotel.

The mob had started assaulting Dr Nath and her husband before police could reach and the police had later managed to rescue the couple and take them away to the police station, where they were provided medical treatment and sent off to Guwahati under police protection, the Forest minister said.

Sixteen of the accused have been arrested, while operation was on to nab the rest. Moreover, the three PSOs of Dr Nath, Sandip Mishra, Subhash Das and Raju Singh.

They have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty and departmental proceedings initiated against them.

A one-man inquiry committee, headed by additional chief secretary PP Verma, and a separate magisterial inquiry have also been ordered into the incident, Mr Hussain said in his reply. (UNI)
