State gears up for Prez polls

 SHILLONG: The State Election department has geared up for July 19 Presidential election which will see a direct contest between UPA’s Pranab Mukherjee and opposition-backed PA Sangma.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on Monday, the Chief Electoral Officer P Naik said, “Elaborate arrangements have been made as per the directives of the Election Commission of India.”

The election will be held at the MLA Hostel from 10 am to 5 pm and the entire proceeding will be videographed, he said

Altogether 59 MLAs from the State will cast their votes.

Purno Sangma had resigned from the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly to contest the election.

“The value of each vote will stand at 17,” Naik said adding that Rajni Shekhar Sibal, Joint Director in the Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairy & Fisheries, has been appointed as the observer for the poll.

The result will be declared on July 22.
