KSU urges govt to release arrested residents

SHILLONG: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Shillong Mihngi Circle, has urged the government to release the persons arrested in the Umkdait, Nongmynsong protest and said that the government should avoid making any further arrest.

In a statement issued here, president of KSU Shillong Mihngi Circle, Sonstar Nongkhlaw expressed concern at the incident where the residents of Umkdait, Nongmensong held out placards on Sunday to voice their complaints and seek help.

He also said that it was disheartening to know that the state government has arrested the residents of Umkdait who came out to protest.

He said that though the lockdown is aimed at  containing the spread of COVID-19 but the poor residents are bearing the brunt of it as there are no economic activities.

Nongkhlaw said that the present crisis called for discussion and consultation to bring about an understanding by all persons concerned.

He said that the union was ready to offer its assistance to the state government, villages/localities and the residents at this time.

The union said that the government should look into the matter and sort out the problems of the residents. Again, he said that the government should make necessary arrangement to the residents of Umkdait as done in other places.
