GUWAHATI: Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) chief Hagrama Mohilary on Thursday reiterated his opposition to Governor’s rule in Bodoland Territorial Area Districts, saying that the party “has been forced to reconsider its understanding” with its alliance partners in the Assam government.

“Though we are in alliance with BJP in the state, we are forced to reconsider our understanding. We are looking at other alternatives. I request Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president JP Nadda and home minister Amit Shah to look into the matter,” Mohilary posted on his official Twitter handle on Thursday.

The term of the Mohilary-led Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) ended on April 27, 2020 and the State Election Commission’s inability to hold the BTC elections owing to the ensuing lockdown prompted imposition of Governor’s rule in BTAD.

The party has in the meantime also filed a petition in Gauhati High Court against the move to impose Governor’s rule in BTAD.

We strongly oppose this decision and filed a petition in Gauhati High Court against the order,” Mohilary said.

“Due to COVID19, the elections of BTC have been postponed. In this time of emergency, people here need our government more. But instead of extending the term, the Governor has given the charge of Bodoland Territorial Area Districts to the principal secretary, Assam,” he added.

Mohilary on Tuesday had asserted that he “is unofficially still the chief of BTC”.

“Along with the alliance partners (in the state government), we had appealed to the Governor for six months’ extension of the council’s tenure, but the plea was not considered,” he said.
