SHILLONG: Three prominent NGOs of the State – the KSU, the FKJGP and HNYF – have decided to wait for the Government notification before taking a final call on their future course of action over enrolment of doubtful people in the State’s electoral rolls.
“Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has said that he would issue a notification on Wednesday night itself to implement the mechanisms suggested by the NGOs to keep a check on enrolment of doubtful people in the State’s electoral rolls,” KSU president Daniel Syiem told reporters following the meeting with the Chief Minister.
Syiem also informed that the Chief Minister has assured them that copies of the notification would be provided to them on Thursday.
“We would meet to decide on our future course of action after studying the notification in details,” Syiem said.
Pointing out that the Government was going slow on the implementation of the mechanism to keep check on the enrolment of doubtful voters, Syiem said, “There is a lack of seriousness on the part of the Government to address the lacunae in the enrolment process.”
When asked whether the Chief Minister had given any assurance on the involvement of traditional heads, civil societies and NGOs in verification of applications submitted for enrolment, the KSU President said the matter would be clear only after they get the notification.
Meanwhile, FKJGP working president Joe Marwein said that the Government was yet to put serial numbers on the application forms as had been suggested by the NGOs.
“This itself is an indication that the Government is not committed to its words,” Marwein said.
It was learnt that the NGOs would meet on Thursday to decide on their future course of action.
