Guwahati: Making separate statements on the cases of Guwahati molestation, MLA assault and attack on PAC members, the Assam government on Wednesday assured the Assembly that all accused will be booked and investigations expedited.
Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain laid the statements on the floor of the House on behalf of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, who holds the Home portfolio.
On the July 9 Guwahati molestation case, the government said it had already formed a one-man inquiry committee, headed by an additional chief secretary, to probe the matter and special investigating team of the crime branch of the city police to investigate the crime.
The second-officer of the Dispur police station had been suspended and 12 of the total 17 accused already arrested.
Hunt for two of the accused was on, while three suspects are yet to be identified, the minister said.
Mr Hussain said the government had provided two PSOs for the protection of the victim, provided her Rs 50,000 as one-time grant and is also arranging to rehabilitate her.
‘The government is taking all steps to ensure that such incidents are not repeated,’ he added. On case of assault on ruling Congress MLA Dr Rumi Nath and her second husband at a Karimganj hotel on June 28 last, Mr Hussain said 16 accused had been arrested and hunt was on to nab the others.
The three PSOs attached with Dr Nath had also been suspended for dereliction of duty. ‘Investigation into the case is going on under direct supervision of senior officers of CID,’ he added. Separate inquiries by an additional chief secretary and a magistrate were going on in the case, he added.
A separate case relating to the MLA assault had also been registered by another legislator Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha against Dr Nath on charges of the latter breaking in and damaging of property in Purkayastha’s official residence at Dispur, the Minister said.
With regard to the case of attack on PAC members at Nagaon circuit house, Mr Hussain said FIR had been registered against three accused, of whom one was in judicial custody and the other two out on bail.
The Chief Minister had appointed a one-member committee, headed by an additional chief secretary, to enquire into the matter. The Assembly Speaker had also referred the matter to the Privilege Committee, which had deferred the matter till final result of the case and inquiry committee’s report.
Gauhati High Court is also monitoring the case, the minister said. The Opposition parties had demanded an adjournment motion on the first day of the Monsoon session to discuss these issues.
The Speaker, while not admitting the adjournment motion, had asked the government to submit its statements. (UNI)
