SHILLONG: The Directorate of Commerce and Industries is doing its bit to ensure there is no shortage of masks in the state.
An official source said production of face masks started from April 3 and 7 lakh masks have been stitched so far.
The directorate distributes the work among self-help groups and tailors. “There are tailors who are willing to stitch masks and the District Commerce and Industries Centres meet them and give the raw materials,” the official said.
The masks are not for sale and are deposited with deputy commissioners who then distribute it to the public.
“It is up to the DCs how they distribute the masks,” the official said, adding that most of the masks have been distributed.
When asked about relief to small-scale businesses, the official said there is no subsidy for them for the lockdown.
However, the government may review the loan status of about 100 small-scale business houses and extend the time for repay. “The loanees have to pay 10 per cent interest, which will be waived.
We have extended repayment dates and there will be no penalty for late payment. But decisions will be taken by board members,” said another official.
