Guwahati: The prime accused in the Guwahati molestation case, Amarjyoti Kalita, was arrested by police in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh after the local police out there was tipped off by Assam Police.
Guwahati city SSP AP Tewari confirmed that the accused, who has been absconding for about a fortnight, was arrested by a special team of Assam Police from near the Benaras Hindu University with the help of local police there.
“The prime accused Amarjyoti Kalita has been arrested in Varanasi and he is being interrogated by a special team of Assam Police at Varanasi Cantonment Police Station,” said the SSP said. Another team of Assam Police is going to Varanasi, he informed.
Earlier, Assam Police had announced Rs one lakh award for concrete information for arrest of Kalita.
With his arrest, so far 14 of the seventeen identified accused in the incident have been arrested by the police.
