Cyclone alert in state

SHILLONG/MAWKYRWAT: The Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson, (DDMA), East Khasi Hills has informed that as per the IMD weather forecast and likelihood of extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘Amphan’, the District Emergency Operations Centre (DEOC) has been fully activated to receive information on any related matter.

Further, for quick and effective response by the district administration, many officers are detailed for duty with immediate effect and they are to keep their mobile ‘switch on’ mode to receive calls and alerts through SMS.
South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Isawanda Laloo also instructed the officers within the district to be alert and take immediate action if the super cyclonic storm ‘AMPHAN’ hits the district.
According to the India Meteorological Department, AMPHAN is likely to move north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Island (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans during afternoon to evening hours of May 20 with maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph and gusty winds upto 185 kmph.
Meghalaya, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have been warned that the cyclonic storm may hit these 3 states in the next two days.
The forecast said that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds (speed 30-40 kmph) and heavy rainfall are likely in East Khasi Hills, West and South West Khasi Hills District. “In view of this, you are requested to remain alert and to monitor the situation in your respected areas and take appropriate precautionary measures. You are requested to keep the undersigned inform of any incident and to make interim ‘first information report’ immediately. Block development Officers are to ensure that their Gram Sevaks take immediate action and file report by the fastest means available to the BDOs and office of the undersigned,” Laloo said.
