SHILLONG: Bertina Lyngdoh, a visually impaired person from the city and currently working in Assam’s Hojai, has raised concern about problems of people with disabilities in this time of lockdown.
Lyngdoh, who is a former student of Jyoti Sroat inclusive school run by Bethany Society, said on Sunday it would be difficult for visually impaired people to maintain social distancing in public places.
“I am speaking on behalf of all the visually impaired (VI) persons. There are many problems like it would be difficult for VI persons to withdraw money through ATM. It would be impossible to tell the password and the amount we want to withdraw from a 1-1.5 m distance in the bank as it would not be safe for us,” she said, adding that the same problem would persist in new places, working places, shops and schools.
Lyngdoh said the government needs to come up with a solution when it comes to visually impaired people “as we are also humans and most of us are working either in Meghalaya or outside”.
Lyngdoh, who was the first visually impaired person in the state to complete post-graduation from NEHU, teaches English in a private school in Hojai.
