Madrid: The Spanish government has opened the door to at least some football in the country being played with supporters in the stands before the end of 2020.
Although the remaining 11 matches of the 2019-20 season, which was temporarily suspended due to the coronavirus in March, will be played behind closed doors, President of Spain’s Superior Sports Committee (CSD) Irene Lozano on Wednesday said it was possible that fans could be back for the start of the next season. “That has not been ruled out at all,” said Lozano in an interview on Spanish radio station, Cadena Cope. There is still no date for the start of the 2020-21 campaign, but with the current season lasting until the end of July, and August dedicated to European competitions, it is unlikely to be before the end of September or early October. “If we can find a way, which is not so difficult given that Spain is an international leader in organizing sporting events with high levels of security, then it is not difficult.””We are working on a way of ensuring we can see sport with guarantees and with public,” added Lozano. She also said it was possible that reporters could be allowed into grounds to cover the remaining matches of the current season when it restarts in the week beginning June 8.”Given that the evolution of the pandemic is very good in Spain, we are seriously considering allowing journalists into La Liga games. Technically it is possible if we maintain a safe distance and we think it is important for them to be there,” commented Lozano. (PTI)
