NONGPOH: The Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi, Rosetta Mary Kurbah, inaugurated the Iew Step (morning market) at Mawspeng ground, Nongpoh, on the border of Mawroh and Nongkhrah villages, on Wednesday. The market is a kilometer away from the National Highway.
Speaking at the inaugural function, the DC said that since the markets have been facing the problem of overcrowding, the new spacious market will allow buyers to move around maintaining physical distancing while purchasing commodities.
Pointing out at the plight of farmers due to the closure of markets, the DC said that Iew Step will allow farmers to sell their produce while minimising risk of being infected from COVID-19.
Kurbah lauded the leaders of the Nongpoh Town Committee and the headmen of Mawroh and Nongkhrah for their cooperation and support to the district administration in the endeavour to protect the people from the dreaded disease.
She also urged the headmen of Mawroh and Nongkhrah besides the village elders to ensure that people maintain physical distancing in the market and adhere to all guidelines and protocols.
The members of the Iew Nongrep Madan Mawspeng Management Committee include BJ Kharshandi, Additional Deputy Commissioner, as chairman and Rayonald Kharkamni, Secretary NTC, as secretary, among other members.
