Khliehriat: East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner & Chairman District Disaster Management Authority has issued guidelines for cyclone preparedness in the district.
In a statement, the deputy commissioner has appealed to the general public to follow guidelines such as checking their houses, secure loose tiles and carry out repairs of doors and windows, remove dead branches or dying trees close to the house, anchor removable objects such as lumber piles, loose tin sheets, loose bricks, garbage cans, sign-boards etc, which can fly in strong winds.
The people were also asked to keep some wooden boards ready so that glass windows can be boarded if needed, they should also keep a hurricane lantern filled with kerosene and battery operated torches. Furthermore, condemned buildings should be demolished, the release said.
The public were also advised to listen to the radio (All India Radio stations giving weather warnings) to monitor warnings and the pass on the information to others while avoiding spreading of rumours. When there is a cyclone alert in their area, the public should not panic but stay alert to the radio warnings for the next 24 hours, said the release.
During cyclone, the public were also asked to stay at home and switch off the electrical mains in their house.
The deputy commissioner also instructed the public to pack basic essentials such as medicines, special food or diet required for babies, children, adults or elders. Further, they should head for the proper shelter or evacuation and remain in the shelter until that they can leave or return to their home.
The deputy commissioner has also issued guidelines to the public to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season while protecting themselves and others from the pandemic.
If they need to evacuate, they should prepare a ‘go kit’ with essential personal items such as hand sanitiser, soap and face masks. They should continue to use preventive actions like washing their hands and wearing a face cover to protect themselves and others.
