SHILLONG: A conglomeration of pressure groups have urged the government to conduct an urgent dry run of the entry and exit points for regulating entry of outsiders into the state prior to import of “highly skilled workers” into the state amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a letter written to the chief minister, the KSU, GSU, FKJGP, HNYF, AYWO, RBYF and ADE, the organisations pointed out that since the enactment of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act in 2016, the successive governments did very little on the ground except for giving empty assurances.
The organisations noted with regret that the state government had failed to implement even the first phase of the project.
The NGOs cited the example of Manipur whereby ILP is implemented immediately once it is being notified by the Central government. The NGOs suggested that the state government should take a cue from Manipur and enforce the law in its entirety.
The first phase of the entry & exit points consisted of the areas of Malidor, Byrnihat Borbhuin, Athiabari, Medhipara Junction, Abhirampara, Chibinang, Bhoglurbitha, Phulbari (Ghat), Rajabala, Singimari Tri-junction, Tangaon, Baljek Airport, Mirjumla, Jhunjuni, Dainadubi, Manikganj, Nalbari Railway Station, Mendipathar Railway Station, Mendipathar Bazar, Khaldang & Bajengdoba.
