Assam flood scene improves; 1 dies in Goalpara

GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam improved further with the number of affected people sliding to 1, 44,322 even as one person died in Goalpara district on Wednesday.

The death toll so far in the first wave of floods in the state has increased to 10.

However, none of the rivers are currently flowing above danger level.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) bulletin informed that 212 villages in four districts – Goalpara, Nagaon, Hojai and Cachar – are still affected by the deluge.

Goalpara district remains relatively more affected with a population of 1, 16,049 in 86 villages of Balijana and Lakhipur revenue circles still coping with the deluge followed by Hojai with 22,507 residents of 31 villages affected.

Currently, 2913 persons are sheltered in 21 relief camps in Goalpara, Hojai and Cachar districts.

Meanwhile, 15 houses have been fully damaged and 10 partially damaged in rain-triggered landslides at Notunbasti, Dibarai, Dolidisa and Muolhoi villages of Harangajao revenue circle in Dima Hasao district on Wednesday, the ASDMA report said.

At least 80 villagers have been affected by the landslides in the hill district. However, no casualty was reported and none injured.

The Notunbasti road was affected by the landslide, the report added.
