SHILLONG: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) War Jaintia Circle said that it continues to oppose the trade at land customs of India and Bangladesh since there are many factors which are not taken into account by the state government.
In a statement issued here, the JSU stated that standard operating procedures (SOPs) released by the state government for trade between India and Bangladesh are insufficient. “There is a need to implement proper protocols and procedures in order to prevent contact between people,” the union said. The union has questioned the government whether the SOPs or protocols released are at par and relevant to those released by Bangladesh.
While some of the procedures are covered for the strict operation of the drivers, there have not been any rules for the operation of the work force at the border, who are dealing with bill calculations and paper works. The union also demanded that the government should bar trucks queuing up along the highway, especially those carrying limestone and boulder. Also only limited number of trucks should be allowed to ply.
