SHILLONG: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has opposed renaming Zigzag road as Ardhendu Chaudhuri Road but did not specify its choice.
In a statement issued here, president of KHNAM, Thomas Passah, said that he was shocked to know that BJP MLA Sanbor Shullai defended the government decision to officially name the road after ex-MLA Ardhendu Chaudhuri who died in harness in a chopper crash.
“Although Shullai said that he (Chaudhuri) was a good man, but we do not want to look into the traits of a person. It is all about preserving our identity,” he said.
Passah alleged that Shullai was trying to woo the non-tribals for electoral gains.
Meanwhile, Shullai clarified that in his statement to the media last week, he had referred to SS Caje and the late FS Cajee.

It may be mentioned that Khasi Students’ Union, Laban circle had agitated in front of Shullai’s residence last Saturday demanding that instead the road be named after HS Lyngdoh-ex-Minister.
It was last year that the state Cabinet had approved new names for several roads and localities in the city and a stadium based on the 24 recommendations of the Meghalaya State Names Authorities Committee.
