SHILLONG: Congress MLAs on Wednesday raised concerns on the constant harassment meted out by Assam police along the Meghalaya-Assam border.
Apprising the Director General of Police (DGP), R Chandranathan of the matter, the MLAs – HM Shangpliang, Kimfa Marbaniang and George Lyngdoh – requested the DGP to ensure protection to the residents in the border areas.
Mawsynram MLA HM Shangpliang said that they met Chandranathan regarding the preparation made by the police in protecting the border areas, especially Langpih.
He said that the MLA from Rambrai, Kimfa Marbaniang, spoke to the DGP about the constant harassment meted out by Assam police in the border areas of Meghalaya and Assam, adding that the people in Langpih are living in fear.
“We have requested the DGP to deploy police personnel for better protection to the people in Langpih as we do not want to give an inch of our land to Assam or anywhere else. He has directed SP as to what needs to be done for protection in Langpih. There is a DSP stationed in Langpih also,” Shangpliang said.
Marbaniang clarified that there are no recent incidents of clashes in the border but Assam police would every now and then harass people in the border areas of Athiabari and Kyrshai.
“We also want the DGP to strengthen the police force there. The police authorities should speak to their counterparts in Assam to ensure peace and harmony,” he said.
The Rambrai MLA said that the Police department will try to set up a police outpost in Langpih.

Shangpliang suggested that the infiltration camp should be shifted from Hat Mawdon and instead a police outpost should be set up there as the place is a witness to most of the smuggling activities to Bangladesh.
Meanwhile, Lyngdoh spoke to the DGP about the Police Investigation Centre (PIC) at Khapmara, which covers 63 villages, and the lack of infrastructure there.
Intimating the DGP about the frequent accidents along the Shillong bypass road, he requested the former to look into these situations as well.
