JOWAI: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) has demanded creation of four new civil sub-divisions in Jaintia Hills district, claiming that more civil sub-divisions will bring the administration closer to the rural people of the district.

The students’ body has demanded creation of civil sub-divisions at Nartiang under Thadlaskein Development Block and Laskein under Laskein Development Block in West Jaintia Hills. They have also sought creation of a civil sub-division at Sutnga-Saipung area under Saipung Development Block and another at Umkiang under Narpuh Elaka in East Jaintia Hills.

“Upgradation of the Laskein Development Block into a civil sub-division is a long-pending demand of the people and we urge the government under the leadership of Dr Mukul Sangma to fulfill their demands,” JSU president Elnathan Pale said.

The JSU has also extended its support to the Western Jaintia Co-ordination Committee (WJCC) which is seeking creation of Nartiang civil sub-division and to the Laskein Block Welfare Organisation (LBWO) which is calling for upgradation of Laskein Development Block into a civil sub-division.

“The newly created East Jaintia Hills district has no civil sub-division and the district administration will be able to function smoothly only when sub-divisions are created,” the JSU chief said.

Notably, both the WJCC and the LBWO have submitted separate memoranda to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma for creation of civil sub-divisions in Nartiang and Laskein.
