SHILLONG: Uncertainty prevailed on Friday when the North-Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) said that the newly elected executive committee of NEHUTA for the year 2020-21 has assumed charge of office from outgoing body while the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) argued that the executive and election committees of NEHUTA are unconstitutional and invalid.
In a statement, the NEHUTA claimed that the election process was completed on June 12 and was conducted by an election committee appointed by the general body of NEHUTA. “The newly elected body affirmed its determination to fight all injustices, corruption, intransparencies and to uphold the values of higher education firmly facing all the extraneous challenges,” the NEHUTA said.
Executive, election committees invalid: NEHU
Meanwhile, the NEHU has said that the executive and election committees of NEHUTA are unconstitutional and invalid. “According to the NEHUTA Constitution, the Association has an executive committee with 11 members including office-bearers. The term of the executive committee (2019-2020) has already expired (early May, 2020) in accordance with the Clause 8 of the Constitution of NEHUTA,” the NEHU said on Friday.
“Despite being aware that NEHUTA’s executive committee’s term was over (including that of president’s and general secretary’s), both the ex-president XP Mao and ex-general secretary MM Khymdeit continued to sign and quote themselves purportedly as president and general secretary, NEHUTA, in all notifications/representations/letters to the University, the media and others from mid-May till date. This is tantamount to manipulation and also violation of the NEHUTA Constitution. Hence, the election committee (notified dated May 29) is unconstitutional and the election of the new executive committee of NEHUTA (2020-21) is null and void,” the University added.
NEHU also asked NEHUTA to ensure the next executive committee be constituted and the election process should be conducted strictly in accordance with the NEHUTA Constitution.
NEHU also alleged that NEHUTA “has been indulging in activities which have deeply hurt the image of a premier institution like NEHU and in complete violation of NEHU Statute 44 (3)”.
