SHILLONG:  Traditional heads and prominent social organiations in Meghalaya have registered opposition to resumption of international trade with Bangladesh at Tamabil as the state government has not come up with any health protocols given the COVID-19 pandemic.

A meeting was convened by the Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (Southern Riwar Circle) along with FKJGP (War Jaintia Hills), at Community Hall Dawki on Monday to discuss on the intention of the government to open up export business at Tamabil Dawki through the Dawki LCS.

Deciding to oppose trade resumption with Bangladesh fearing health risks of the local residents, the attendees of the meeting were baffled as the government plans to open the trade without inspecting the place.

They maintained that before the government plans to reopen it should inspect thoroughly to know the ground reality.

At the meeting, the Doloi of Nongtalang Elaka has informed that the Nongtalang Elaka held a meeting with the exporters operating within the jurisdiction of Nongtalang Elaka that they decided to halt trade with Bangladesh through the Dawki LCS as the state government had not yet arranged protocols.

The KSU president of War Jaintia Circle, Laitphar Syngkrem also said that that KSU EC has also decided to oppose the move of the government to reopen any trading business as COVID-19 cases are on the rise.
