GUWAHATI: Over 36,000 people in four districts of Assam have been affected by the second wave of floods, with one death reported from Sivasagar district in the past 24 hours, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority’s flood bulletin stated on Tuesday.
Parts of the state have witnessed heavy rain over the past few days as the Brahmaputra in Neamatighat (Jorhat) and Dhubri, Dikhow and Disang rivers in Sivasagar district and Dhansiri river at Numaligarh in Golaghat district and Jia Bharali river at NT Road crossing in Sonitpur district, flows above danger level.
Almost 100 villages lie submerged in the affected districts of Dhemaji on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, and three Upper Assam districts of Jorhat, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh.
The first wave of floods from May 22 last to the early part of June submerged several districts with over three lakh people affected and at least 10 deluge-related deaths reported.
Rain-triggered landslides have claimed at least 21 lives in the state over the past few weeks, ASDMA sources said.
