NONGSTOIN: With a bid to strengthen ties between local traders and those from outside the district, farmers, local suppliers and ginger traders of West Khasi Hills, on Wednesday, formed the Nongstoin Green Ginger Association (NGGA).
Yoophi Symblai, president of the NGGA told pressmen here that the association’s aim and objective of the association is to protect the local farmers and suppliers from being deprived of access to proper market for their produces.
Maintaining that a number of locals earn a living from ginger farming, Symblai said that big ginger traders from outside buy their produce at a very low price which is not acceptable considering the hard work locals put in cultivating the commodity.
He added that farmers succumb to their demands and thus earn low revenue for their produce.
He hoped that the association, which is registered with the government, will empower the farmers to stabilise the price of ginger and help them earn a handsome amount.
