73 BNP leaders have died of COVID: Party official

Dhaka: Seventy-three leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have died from COVID-19 while 284 been infected, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said here on Thursday.
Criticising the government, Fakhrul said the authorities failed to show their responsibilities towards the people. On a question, Fakhrul said, the China experts claim that Bangladesh had no preparation to fight the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh on Thursday recorded 3,946 new infections, taking the total number of COVID-19 cases to 1,26,606, a health official said.
The death toll in the country also rose to 1,621 as 39 new fatalities were reported in past 24 hours.
As many as 1,829 more recoveries were confirmed over the past 24 hours, bringing the total recover to more than 50,000.
Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8. Since then the country has been witnessing increase in the infections and deaths.
Coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to 213 countries and territories.
As of Tuesday, the pandemic infected 95,47,109 people and killed 4,85,333 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it. However, total recovery reached 51,89,474 across the world. (UNI)
