SHILLONG: The National People’s Party (NPP) is ready to welcome Congress MLAs who may wish to join the party and become a part of the MDA government.
Reacting to a query about some Congress MLAs reportedly keen to cross over, NPP senior leader Prestone Tynsong said that if they want, the NPP’s doors are always open and they can join by meeting the criteria.
He, however, said that no one from the Congress has approached him till now expressing their desire to join the NPP.
He said if the MLAs want to leave the Congress and join NPP, they would first have to resign as legislators or else they would be disqualified under the anti-defection law.
Tynsong said there is no political instability in Meghalaya and reports about political rumblings are mere speculation after the Manipur episode, but the problem has since been resolved in that state.
Asked if there was any truth in reports about some MDA MLAs approaching Congress, he said that he was not aware about it.
He also said that it was natural for Congress, which is an opposition party, to try to form the government.
The deputy chief minister on Wednesday night also met the UDP president, Metbah Lyngdoh, but said it was just a courtesy call.
