Institute donates face masks
SHILLONG: The Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (DBT-IBSD), Shillong Centre, distributed institute-made face masks to security personnel and vendors in the local vegetable market at 6th Mile, Upper Shillong. The initiative was taken up under the guidance of the Director, Prof. Pulok K Mukherjee, with an objective to prevent the spread of COVID-19 among and through local vendors.
Call to expedite relocation
SHILLONG: Ka Synjuk ki Dorbar Shnong Shangpung , West Jaintia Hills, has asked State Government to expedite the relocation of the headquarter of PWD (Roads), North Jowai Division, to Shangpung. The notification in this regard was issued by the government in 2018 under which the name of the PWD (Roads), North Jowai Division, was also changed to Shangpung Division. The Synjuk ki Dorbar Shnong Shangpung on Friday met Deputy Chief Minister in-charge PWD (Roads) and urged the latter to expedite the process for the benefit of every one.
Funds for skill-based education
SHILLONG: The Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) Meghalaya unit has submitted a memorandum to the state government through the deputy commissioner of West Khasi Hills district highlighting the plight of unemployed youths and lack of proper infrastructure in Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Community College, Wahiajer. The memorandum, submitted by Darilin Tang, state secretary of ABVP Meghalaya, asked the government to expedite the process of grant release for various development initiatives by the College to promote skill-based education. The ABVP also sought funds relating to various issues like opening of new courses like food processing, nursing, plumbing, electrical work etc. Funds were also sought for construction of hostels for the students, increase in faculties and construction of infrastructure and providing transporting facilities. The ABVP also stated that the goal to a self-reliant India can be achieved to its fullest potential only if the youth of the country is facilitated with the best of infrastructure and education.
GSU decries cop harassment
SHILLONG: A joint meeting called by Garo Students’ Union (GSU) Eastern Zone has expressed displeasure over harassment meted out by Williamnagar Police to the student body and members of Mothers’ Union. The student body has also warned of democratic protest “if harassment by the police officers continues with mala fide intention”. The GSU said that the harassment was meted out by the cops for protesting against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and later Citizenship (Amendment) Act. “Since the protest against CAA is statewide, pinpointing particular individuals or organisations tantamounts to harassment by misusing official powers,” the GSU said. The joint meeting, which was held on Wednesday, was attended by leaders of GSU-CEC, Garoland State Movement Committee-CEC, Mothers’ Union (Williamnagar), GSU Eastern Zone, and FKGJP-Eastern Zone.
