Rally to condemn killing

TURA: Exhibiting immense sense of oneness when it comes to upholding peace in the region, thousands of people including students, teachers, lecturers, Church leaders, NGOs and Civil Societies etc gathered for the rally and procession organized by the West Garo Hills Teachers Welfare Forum (WGHTWF), Tura condemning the brutal killing of Dennybirth G Momin, a school teacher in Resubelpara.

While addressing the gathering at the rally held at Chandmari Playground, Tura, Senior teacher, Viola Kathleen G Momin said that, such acts of atrocities are unnecessary, shameful and it only brings a great loss to the people.

“There are only a handful of A’chik Science and Mathematics teachers in the region and killing them will not help the people of the region move forward in anyway” she said and appealed that in future such violent attacks on teachers should not be carried out anymore.

After the rally, the gathering proceeded to the Deputy Commissioners Office, Tura in a procession and submitted a memorandum seeking protection and safety for the teaching fraternity of the region. The WGHTWF in its memorandum also expressed their concern for the safety and security of teachers who are serving in remote areas of Garo Hills who are vulnerable to such attacks and violence. The Forum is also petitioning the Government for payment of Ex-gratia to the widow of Dennybirth G Momin and to provide a permanent government job to her so as to help her to cope with her loss and responsibility of bringing up her two minor children.

WGHTWF while speaking to media persons expressed their gratitude to the all the people of the society who had come forward to participate in the rally and procession showing their solidarity and support for the cause.
