CHENNAI: The Opposition DMK, on Saturday, urged the Tamil Nadu government to ensure a fair probe into the custodial deaths of the father-son duo — Jayaraj and Benicks — allegedly due to police excesses at Sathankulam in Tuticorin district failing which it would move the Court demanding a CBI probe into it.
In a series of tweets, DMK president MK Stalin sought to know on what basis Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said that Benicks died of breathing problems and Jayaraj due to ill-health, when their post-mortem report was yet to come.
Demanding justice for the duo, he said since the fault lies with the government, the ruling AIADMK announced a solatium of Rs 25 lakh to their families.
‘’If it is a natural death, would you have given the assistance’’, he sought to know and demanded the arrest of those involved in the deaths.
Jayaraj and Benicks (alias Fenix) were booked for not closing their mobile shop in time on June 19 by the Sathankulam Police in Tuticorin district in Tamil Nadu. They were remanded in judicial custody and lodged in Kovilpatti jail on June 21. Jayaraj died on June 22 night and his son Benicks on June 23 morning in judicial custody. (Agencies)
