NONGSTOIN: The State Congress leadership is under tremendous pressure with the process of selecting candidate for Mawshynrut constituency in West Khasi Hills for the Assembly elections due in 2013.

Altogether three aspirants have sought ticket and one of them is prominent businesswoman and the State Mahila Congress general secretary Pelcy Snaitang.

Besides being a grass root-level worker of the party for a very long time, Snaitang has another advantage being the only woman ticket aspirant.

Methodius Dkhar, who was responsible of bringing the National Self Employment Mission (NSEM) to the State, is another ticket aspirant. Dkhar joined the party only a few months ago. The third aspirant is former Congress MDC from Mawthengkut Srally Rashir.

Rashir was defeated in the last District Council election by UDP’s FK Ryntathiang.

Interestingly, Ryntathiang is contesting 2013 election from Mawshynrut on a UDP ticket.

According to Congress sources, Snaitang’s chance of getting the ticket is bright since majority of the party workers are in favour of her candidature.

“Another factor which stands in favour of the State Congress Mahila general secretary is her connection with people at the grass root level,” party sources said adding that she has the backing of Mawthengkut MLA Francis Pondit Sangma. Methodius Dkhar also stands a good chance of winning ticket since he enjoys the backing of some senior Congress leaders. “As it stands at present, the former MDC from Mawthengkut is far behind in the race for party ticket,” party sources said.
