Pynthorbah residents under threat of torrential rain

SHILLONGTorrential rain has posed a risk to the residents of Pynthorbah and also affected the standing crop and farmlands in Langkyrding and Pynthor.

In this connection, a delegation of traditional heads from Pynthorumkhrah led by local MDC, P N Syiem met Water Resources Minister, Brolding Nongsiej on Monday to discuss the matter.

Syiem said that the heavy downpour during summers and even winter rains that last for 15-20 minutes are a risk to the residents in Langkyrding, Nongmynsong, Pynthor.

“Residents are also forced to leave their homes even at 1 am to flee from any impending danger due to the heavy rain”, he said adding that the flash flood is very dangerous.

He informed that the minister told them about a scheme procured by the government from the Ministry of Water Resources called the Pynthorumkhrah Flood Control Protection Project

However, the guidelines of the Ministry which require vast tract of land for implementation of the scheme and are currently examining the scheme.

“There is also the river rejuvenation committee as directed by the NGT constituted for Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi”, Syiem said.
