Guwahati: A two-member CBI team, headed by a special director, on Friday visited Kokrajhar district to collect information about the ethnic clashes in lower Assam districts which have claimed 77 lives.

“The purpose of their visit is to collect preliminary information about the clashes and to ascertain the possible angle of their investigation,” an official said after the arrival of CBI Special Director K Saleem Ali and Deputy Inspector General Satish Golcha in Kokrajhar.

With the police in four affected districts – Kokrajhar, Chirang, Dhubri and Baska – registering 309 cases in connection with the violence, CBI is yet to decide on the cases it would investigate, the official said. “The team will closely work with the Assam Police to finalise the cases it would investigate,” he said.

The two CBI officials met Chief Secretary N K Das and DGP J N Choudhury to discuss the different issues related to the violence, officials said.

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on August 7 had recommended a CBI investigation into the violence.

However there was no fresh incident from the troubled districts with curfew relaxed during the day in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri, though night curfew would continue till further orders.

Meanwhile, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde will visit riot-hit western Assam on August 13, while a Union Home ministry and a CBI team today visited worst-affected Kokrajhar, heartland of Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts (BTAD). (Agencies)
