 Shillong: Hundreds of youth gathered at the MUDA Complex here on Saturday to witness vibrant performances by students of various colleges in the city on the occasion of International Youth Day.
The International Youth Day with the theme ‘Building a Better World: Partnering with Youth’ was organised by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) in collaboration with Red Ribbon clubs of Shillong as a part of a month-long campaign.
Draped in red, the students enthralled the gathering with their performances including some dazzling dance displays.
The ‘Flash Mob’ performed by these students were interspersed with talks on pro-active teams working to forge meaningful partnerships with the youth to ensure the foundation for building a state free of HIV.
The theme chosen for this day is a global call for action for young men and women as well as other stakeholders around the world to develop and engage in partnerships with and for the youth towards building a better world.
According to MACS, the International Youth Day provides an important opportunity to collaborate with young people, especially in the areas of employment, entrepreneurship, political inclusion, citizenship and protection of rights and education, including on sexual and reproductive health and also to address the role of youth in HIV/ AIDS intervention programmes.
“This celebration was aimed to highlight good practices in developing and expanding successful partnerships with young people and to put forward concrete recommendations on how the United Nations and stakeholders around the world can build and enhance partnerships with the youth,” MACS Project Director Dr A Jyrwa said.
Later, all the students pledged to extend their support in the fight against HIV/ AIDS in the State.
