Assam residents enter GH, assault locals

TURA: A case against several people of Assam has been registered for illegally entering Garo Hills and for assaulting two locals.
Despite the continuation of interstate ban in the state in view of the incessant surge in COVID-19 cases in Assam, the people from the neighbouring state had reportedly entered the region, involved in sand transportation, and had assaulted two locals who tried to stop them.
The FIR was filed with the Phulbari Police Station by the president of the All Meghalaya Minorities Students’ Union (AMMSU) on Sunday morning.
According to the FIR, a group of people from Assam were seen taking turns to transport sand from Ginning Mill area under Phulbari in around 30 boats with the help of local people.
Two local residents, who tried to stop the activity, were assaulted by the group and were thrown into flood waters. (The victims somehow escaped unhurt and later narrated their ordeals the members of AMMSU.
On receipt of the information, the AMMSU filed an FIR, demanding a probe into the matter and action against those involved.
The AMMSU president also urged the authorities to take necessary steps to check the illegal entry of people from Assam into Garo Hills.
