JOWAI: The drivers and sweepers employed under the Jowai Municipal Board (JMB) have demand enhancement of their salary and have also set a 15-day deadline for the Board’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to fulfill their demands failing which they have threatened to resort to agitation.

There are 23 employees employed as drivers and sweepers in the JMB. Out of six drivers only one gets the scale salary while the others get a fixed salary of Rs 7500 per month. Out of 18 sweepers, nine are given scale salary while the rest are being paid Rs 6000 per month.

“I have been serving in the Board for the last 25 years and my scale salary is only Rs 8500 per month,” said one of the sweepers.

The employees have also complained that besides getting less salary they never get any help from the JMB. The Board does not provide gloves and masks to the sweepers and only inferior quality boots and rain coats.

They also alleged that the Board has also stopped the free medical check-up that was held twice every month in the past.
