NONGSTOIN: Despite the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) withdrawing its support to the Joint Action Committee (JAC) to oppose the setting up coke factories in Shallang, the latter on Friday said that they will continue to oppose the move to set up coke factories here.
The JAC said this after a meeting at the office of the Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP) Mawshynrut circle. The meet deliberated on the future step of action with regard to the coke factories set-up.
It may be mentioned that the KSU Mawshynrut Circle president, Armstrong Sohshang, along with other members, had recently said that the main reason for quitting is the lack of trust and confidence within the JAC.
Expressing concern over the recent developments, the JAC said that it will not include HYC, WYF and HANM in the committee again.
The JAC now has only four active NGOs which include HNYF, FKJGP, UHM and WKSU Mawshynrut circle along with the Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong Umdang area.
On the decision of the KSU, the JAC said that it is a “hot-headed decision”, adding “they should think wisely before making a move”.
The ‘suspicious’ JAC also said that the KSU had something behind the scene or else the latter would not have taken a hasty decision without consulting the JAC members.
The meeting also decided that the members of JAC will meet the SDO of Mawshynrut Civil Sub-Division and enquire about the coke factories in Shallang.
It was during the meeting where Rishai Mawlong, president of WKSU, Mawshynrut, was appointed as vice chairman of JAC and Steven Nongsiej as the assistant secretary of JAC.
