Guwahati: Assam CM Tarun Gogoi on Thursday blamed it on rumour mongering over recent violence in the State that created panic among students and people from Assam and other parts of NE living in southern states and Maharashtra resulting in exodus of thousands of them.

“I appeal to students and other persons, especially those who are in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, that they should not get panicked and rush back. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has personally talked to the chief ministers of the two states to ensure security of people from the region,” Gogoi said.

He said a ministerial team would leave for Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh on Friday and assured that there was absolutely no need to panic.

Gogoi said he had already got in touch with the CMs of Maharashtra, Kerela, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh as well as the Union Home minister to ensure the safety and security of people of Assam-origin in those states. “The situation in Maharashtra and Kerala is now under control now. There is still tension in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka,” he said adding that the people in the other states are living in fear and hence trying to return home.

He dismissed as baseless reports in a section of media that he had made a call to people of the State living in those states to return.
